Running a Small Business Alone? Monterey County Businesses Can Get a Free Website

It's 6 a.m. and you're already answering messages. By noon you've been the cashier, the cleaner, the delivery driver, and the person who fixes whatever just broke. When everyone else clocks out for the day, you open the laptop to do the books, answer the emails you missed, and figure out how to pay for next month.

And somewhere in all of that, someone said, "You should really have a website."

You nodded. You meant it, too. But there's only one of you, and the website was never going to be what got done today.

If that sounds familiar, this post is for you. We're going to talk honestly about what it's like to run a small business with no one to hand things off to, and then we're going to tell you about something we're doing to help right here in Monterey County.

The Real Job Description of a One-Person Business

Nobody hangs a sign on a small business that says "owner, plus everything else." But that's the job. A 2026 survey of 1,000 U.S. small business owners, commissioned by Adobe Express and fielded by Talker Research, found the average owner plays five different roles in a single day. The most common ones were:

    • Customer service rep (54% of owners)
    • Marketer (44%)
    • Bookkeeper (43%)
    • Social media manager (41%)
    • Creative director (35%)

That's before you even get to the actual work your business exists to do. The same survey found owners put in more than 200 extra hours a year covering roles they never planned to fill. That's five full work weeks, every year, spent on jobs nobody hired you for.

The hours add up too. Gallup's long-running small business research has put the average owner's workweek at roughly 52 hours, with a majority of owners working 50 or more. Many of them work six days a week. That's not a job. That's a life built around a job.

The Cost Nobody Puts on the Invoice

The hardest part of running a business alone isn't any single task. It's that it never stops. There's no one to cover for you when you're sick, no one to take the call when your kid has a game, and no one to tell you it's okay to close the laptop.

So you work long hours. You skip the break you keep promising yourself. And you hope, honestly pray some days, that this is the month things finally ease up.

The weight of it shows up in small ways. You put off the things that feel optional, even when you know they matter. You make decisions tired. You say yes to the next urgent thing and no to the important thing that could actually make next year easier.

We know, because we've been there.

Why the Website Keeps Falling to the Bottom of the List

Here's the thing about a website: it's rarely the urgent thing. It will never be the thing that's on fire today. So it sits at the bottom of the list, month after month, while the urgent stuff wins.

And when you do look into it, the price doesn't help. Quotes for a small business website are commonly cited anywhere from about $1,000 to $10,000. When you're weighing that against inventory, rent, or payroll, the website loses. That's not bad judgment. That's a business owner doing the math with the money they actually have.

Meanwhile, the world keeps moving. A 2025 Clutch survey of U.S. small business owners found that 83% now have a website, up from 64% in 2018. Other surveys put the share without one higher, closer to one in four. Either way, a website is becoming the thing customers simply expect to find when they look a business up.

Social media can help, and plenty of owners lean on it because it's free and fast. But those platforms are rented space. The rules and the reach can change overnight. A website is the one corner of the internet that's actually yours.

Why We Started Tandem Edge Solutions

We started Tandem Edge to bring the tools big companies take for granted to small businesses. Big companies have teams for design, tech, marketing, and operations. Most small business owners have themselves, a phone, and whatever hours are left.

We know the struggle and what it does to people. It's the reason we build apps, websites, and AI-powered automations that help small businesses scale without the stress. And it's the reason for what comes next.

    The Monterey County Website Grant

Every month, Tandem Edge Solutions designs and builds a website for one Monterey County small business, free. It's our way of giving back at home, to the community we live and work in.

    What's included, free

    • Custom design and build, up to 5 pages
    • Mobile-friendly layout with a contact form
    • Basic Google search setup
    • One round of revisions
    • A launch walkthrough so you can update the site yourself

    What you cover

You pay for your own domain name (about $12 to $25 a year) and hosting (about $0 to $25 a month), directly to those providers. You own your domain. And we walk you through all of the costs before we start, so there are no surprises.

Online stores, booking systems, custom apps, and ongoing edits after launch aren't part of the free build.

    Who can apply

You live in Monterey County, your business operates here, and your business has fewer than 5 employees. That includes you.

    How we choose

We look at how much a website would change your business, your impact on the community, and whether you're ready to share photos and details with us in the next few weeks. We're not looking for the biggest business. We're looking for the one a website would help the most.

How to Apply: Step by Step

    1. Check that you qualify. You're in Monterey County, your business operates here, and you have fewer than 5 employees counting yourself.
    2. Gather the basics. Business name, your name, email, phone, your city, and how many people work in your business.
    3. Write down what your business does. A few plain sentences is plenty. Add your current website or social links if you have them.
    4. Think about what a website would change. This is the part we read most closely. Would it bring in more customers? Save you from answering the same questions all day? Help people find you for the first time?
    5. Get your photos and details ready. The businesses that are ready to share them quickly are the ones we can build for fastest.
    6. Submit the form by the 10th. It takes about 5 minutes. We announce the selected business on the 15th.

Not chosen this month? You're automatically entered the next month, for up to 3 months. You don't have to reapply.

You can find the form and the full details on our Website Grant page.

    Already Built: Sarda's Fusion

One of our recent builds was Sarda's Fusion, a chef-led catering business. The website brings the fusion cuisine, the event services, and a deeply personal culinary story together in one place. It's the kind of business where the person behind the food is the whole reason people come back, and now there's a home online that tells that story.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Tandem Edge Solutions Monterey County Website Grant?

Each month, Tandem Edge Solutions designs and builds a website for one Monterey County small business at no charge for the design work. The business owner only pays for their own domain name and hosting, and owns the domain outright.

Who is eligible for the free website?

You need to live in Monterey County, your business needs to operate in the county, and your business needs to have fewer than 5 employees, counting yourself. Selections are based on how much a website would change your business, your impact on the community, and whether you're ready to share photos and details within a few weeks.

What does the free website include, and what do I pay for?

The free build includes a custom design of up to 5 pages, a mobile-friendly layout with a contact form, basic Google search setup, one round of revisions, and a launch walkthrough so you can update the site yourself. You pay your domain name (about $12 to $25 per year) and hosting (about $0 to $25 per month) directly to the providers. Online stores, booking systems, custom apps, and ongoing edits after launch are not included.

How do I apply, and when are winners chosen?

Apply through the short form on the Tandem Edge Solutions website grant page, which takes about 5 minutes. Each monthly round closes on the 10th, and the selected business is announced on the 15th.

What happens if my business isn't chosen this month?

You're automatically entered into the next month's round for up to 3 months, so there's no need to reapply.

Does a small business still need a website if it's active on social media?

For most businesses, yes. Social media platforms can change their rules and reach at any time, while a website is a page you own and control. A 2025 Clutch survey of U.S. small business owners found 83% now have a website, up from 64% in 2018, so a website is increasingly what customers expect to find when they look a business up.

If you're the one holding it all together, let us take one thing off your plate. Apply for the Monterey County Website Grant and let's build something that works for you while you're busy doing everything else.
